Broken by You
Published in Paperback by United Church Pub House (March, 1995)
Average review score:

Poor Biblical standpointsIf you are a Christian searching for a book on physical abuse that offers Biblical advice, do NOT use this book. I was VERY upset by just the first few pages of this book. Paterson takes verses of the Bible, those regarding the husband's leadership of the household, and says they are wrong. For a man to to claim to have Biblical knowledge and call himself a Christian, I get very upset at his conclusion that the Bible is wrong. His view of male leadership is that they must make their wives obey their every whim which he believes leads to the cause of physical abuse. Perhaps Paterson should reread the Bible, and read MORE verses than the 2 or 3 he provided, so he can realize that male leadership meant SPIRITUAL leadership. The husband is called to be the servant-leader...one who serves his family and yet leads them spiritually and provides for them. How on earth does that lead to abuse??? Whereas some of the advice he gives is good, I take his words with a grain of salt. I do not appreciate his devaluing of the Bible, one he claims he lives for. Perhaps if he actually studied the Bible he might have a better case for himself and perhaps would provide more accurate and TRUE knowledge to the reader. And maybe he would also realize that abuse is the choicee of the abuser...the abuser is NOT a zombie so perhaps the author could do us all a favor and stop blaming a verse or two in the Bible on abuse. If he has problems with that, then he really needs to get right with God before he presumes to know what a verse means. And maybe it would do him well to actually study the Bible before writing about it. This is NOT a good book due it it's VERY bad interpretation of the Bible.

Heartburn and What to Do About It
Published in Paperback by Avery Penguin Putnam (March, 1998)
Average review score:

The book is about alternative medicine rather than heartburnThis book is not about heartburn. The first part of the book is about all manner of digestive problems, and then even about disorders purportedly related to digestive disorders. The second part of the book suggests that good diet (especially yogurt), enemas, and something called probiotics will cure all diseases, and therefore incidentally also heartburn (which thus has served only as a marketing come-on to lure in buyers). I believe there is much to be learned from alternative medicine, but this book actually offers very little rigorous (supported) information. For entertainment, and in closing, let me quote a tidbit. "Make the coffee enema by boiling six heaping tablespoons of ground coffee (not instant) in two quarts of water for fifteen minutes, cooling to a comfortable temperature, and straining..." It is probably a very good idea to let that boiling coffee cool a little before the anal consumption, but why is instant coffee not good, and how does this fix heartburn?

Soviet Perceptions of the United States
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (July, 1980)
Average review score:

Where There is SmokeWhen I found this book my interest was peeked. How often have we all read books from the perception of the US or UK governments of the Soviet Union. The Soviets are always portrayed in a rather negative light. I thought it would be very informative to see how they perceived us. I was rather excited to read the book. Unfortuantly for me the only thing less dull then this book is watching water evaporate. You can tell this book was written and published because of a tenor requirement for a college professor. I can just image classes of 19 year olds trying to get through his dense, dry and dull writing. Walking through pudding up to your neck in December would be easier then completing this book. What kind of sick man would force college kids to read this book?
To be honest I could only force myself to get through half of the book, it was just so badly written that even the interesting bits were bogged down with the obscure word choice. The best use for the book going forward would be as a doorstop or coaster. Save yourself the money, time and headaches and pass by this book fast.

Who's the liar? The historical revelations that Hiss was, in fact, a spy should make this book useful as a doorstop.

Yucatan Cookbook: Recipes & Tales
Published in Paperback by Red Crane Books (June, 1996)
Average review score:

The most slap-dash cookbook I've ever encountered.Have you ever cooked a pig's ear? Would you like to know how? You won't learn from the Yucatan Cookbook, unless you can divine more from the words "boil in salted water until done. Chop" than I can. No advice for the poor unenelightened gringo as to how long that might take, or what attributes one might look for in a properly cooked pig's ear. This sort of sloppiness is rampant in this slap-dash cookbook. A recipe for cooking beans never mentions water. More than one recipe requires you to "Prepare chilies as in the recipe for iguana," which comes later in the book and for which no page number is given. In at least one place, a page number is supposed to be given, but it is listed as 00. (The editing, clearly, is as sloppy as the writing.) I confess that I have tried no recipes from this book, but that is because I am fairly confident they would not work. As a culinary travelogue of Mexico the book is (at times) interesting. But if you want a usable cookbook of Yucatan cuisine, I suggest you look elsewhere.
